In Abuja Expert tasks NASS on passage of building code
According to him, the activities of quacks and other sharp practices in building will continue to linger in the country until the relevant laws are enacted and enforced.Prof. Akin Akindoyemi, former Chairman of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), has urged the National Assembly to ensure quick passage of the law to enforce the National Building Code.
Akindoyemi made the call on Tuesday in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the sideline of the 2015 Builders Congress organised by CORBON.
The theme of the congress is "Nigerian Building Industry and the National Economy: Synergies and Opportunities’’.
The professor noted that the National Assembly sponsored the bill for the enforcement of the National Building Code six years ago but never actualised it.
"That bill has been hanging at the National Assembly without being passed into law for six years, because of selfish and corrupt reasons.
"The council was glad when the assembly then decided to sponsor the bill, then we assisted it to develop the document but they never finished the process.
"The last assembly also came up with it and promised to pass it into law but never did. The information we got was not pleasant and not for public consumption.
"The past House of Representatives had two readings and shelved it while the past Senate had two readings and shelve the bill too.
"They are hesitant but it was generated by them; we didn’t propose it but they did; we only went and made it perfect but they refused to pass it into law, ‘’ Akindoyemi said.
He said that if the bill was not passed into law, there would continue to be numerous shortcomings in the building and construction industry.
