FG set to negotiate with militants following a recent Chevron attack

Image
Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and coordinator of the presidential amnesty programme, Paul Boroh stated this on Friday, May 6, while addressing newsmen in Abuja. The recent attack was claimed by the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), a militant group which threatened to cripple the nation’s economy if the government does not respond to its demand. According to Boroh, the government is willing to entertain the group's grievances. “Pipeline vandalism is an avoidable self-inflicted agony. It is unreasonable to engage in such criminal activity not only because of the resultant economic effect on the country but particularly as it also negatively affects the Niger Delta environment,” he said. “The act of vandalising pipelines is counter-productive apart from it being a crime against the state. Those involved in this nefarious activity are economic and environmental saboteurs. It will do well for them to refrain from it, as my office is always open to dialogue regardless of the

Much fuss about MOPICON bill

Image
You would actually think even every aspiring filmmaker would consider it an important issue, and ensure that the bill never becomes a law, especially, when they have been given an opportunity to part of a review committee. The Motion Picture Practitioners Council of Nigeria (MOPICON) bill was created over 10 years ago after a group of industry practitioners sat to draft it. Recently, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the inauguration of a Ministerial Committee aimed at fast-tracking the passage into law of the MOPICON Bill . It trended on Twitter, Facebook and on every social media platform you can think of, but I discovered three group of people involved in the MOPICON drama. Filmmakers who do not know about MOPICON My conversation with a filmmaker whose name I won't mention: Me: What are your thoughts on the controversial MOPICON bill? Renowned filmmaker: What is that one again? Me: It's a 49 page document aimed at regulating Nollywood. A

South China Sea China says criticism could rebound like coiled spring

Image
International criticism of China over the disputed South China Sea will rebound like a coiled spring, a Chinese diplomat said on Friday, as a U.S . warship visited Shanghai against a backdrop of rising tension in the region. China claims almost all of the energy-rich South China Sea, through which more than $5 trillion of trade passes each year. The Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia and Taiwan have overlapping claims. China's increasingly assertive moves in the waters, including building artificial islands and air strips, have rattled nerves, with the Group of Seven (G7) advanced economies warning last month they opposed provocation there. Ouyang Yujing, director-general of Chinese Foreign Ministry's Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs, said China took note of the criticism. " Of course we're willing to take on board constructive comments and criticism by the relevant countries, " Ouyang told a news briefing. " But if they are aimed at putting press

Zika Bacteria blocks mosquitoes from transmitting virus -Brazilian study

Image
Infecting mosquitoes with a strain of bacteria known as Wolbachia significantly reduced their ability to transmit the Zika virus, Brazilian researchers said on Wednesday, raising hope for this biological method of blocking transmission of the deadly virus. The bacteria has been released in several countries including Australia, Brazil, Indonesia and Vietnam as part of strategies to control dengue, and the new finding shows the method also works with Zika, a close relative of dengue. Zika has been linked with the birth defect microcephaly that has been sweeping through South and Central America and the Caribbean and making its way north to the United States. In February the World Health Organization declared Zika a global health emergency. The connection between Zika and microcephaly came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed more than 1,100 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers. The new study, by researchers at Brazil

In US Watchdog probes alleged "profiling" of Somalis at Minneapolis TSA office

Image
A US Homeland Security Department watchdog unit is investigating alleged "profiling" of Somali-Americans by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in Minneapolis , the agency said in a statement on Thursday. The inquiry involves allegations that a TSA supervisor in Minneapolis, home to a large Somali-American population, told a subordinate to run the names of Somali-American visitors to a local agency office through counter-terrorism databases. The TSA operates airline security checkpoints and is a part of Homeland Security, a sprawling U.S. cabinet department. Homeland Security's inspector general said it was investigating possible "profiling" by TSA after a TSA employee alleged his supervisor advised him " to treat members of the Somali community differently from others who visit the Minneapolis TSA office." A spokeswoman for the Inspector General's Office said that the probe began after a TSA manager in Minneapolis told a U.S. House of

The possible sale -- which the officials said was favored within the U.S. administration but is subject to review by Congress -- underscores the deepening U.S. involvement in helping governments in north and west Africa fight extremist groups. U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Michael Franken, a deputy commander of the Pentagon's Africa Command, told a Was

The regulator said it had conducted an in-depth investigation of Ms Gibson's activities and had applied to Australia's Federal Court for leave to pursue legal action. Untrue claims Ms Gibson's claims to have cured her cancer with Ayurvedic medicine, oxygen therapy and a gluten and refined sugar-free diet propelled her to prominence. Pakistan elders 'ordered girl's killing' in Abbottabad

Police in Pakistan say village elders ordered the murder of a teenage girl because she had helped a school friend to elope. The 16-year-old was kidnapped from her home near Abbottabad, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and put inside a vehicle that was set alight, police said. Graphic images of her body have been circulated on social media. Police say the victim's mother and the leader of the local council, or jirga, are among several people arrested. The killing has been linked to orders given last week by the jirga, a traditional assembly of elders, in Makol village, Pakistan's Dawn newspaper reported . According to police, the 15-member jirga had ordered the girl, named as Amber, to be killed and set alight as punishment for helping her friend to marry of her own free will. N Korea poised for rare party gathering

Image
North Korea is poised to hold its first party congress in decades, as leader Kim Jong-un seeks to cement his status and chart a vision for the future. Thousands of delegates begin meeting on Friday for a choreographed show of support being seen as an unofficial coronation. The congress could also see a new generation of leaders put in place. Its run-up has seen attempts at missile launches amid speculation the North will conduct a fifth nuclear test. Sanctions on North Korea were tightened after it conducted a fourth nuclear test in January, and subsequent missile tests. But in the seventh party congress, the first since 1980, experts say Kim Jong-un is likely to declare his so-called "Byongjin" policy, which is the simultaneous push towards economic development and nuclear capability. The state has allowed foreign journalists to cover the congress, although their movements are controlled and they are not allowed access to ordinary North Koreans No congress was held during th

Australian court bails student who 'spent bank error millions'

Image
An Australian court has granted bail to a Malaysian woman who withdrew more than A$4.6m (£2.3m) mistakenly made available to her by a bank. A lawyer representing Christine Jiaxin Lee, 21, said she had spent about A$1m on luxury items including handbags. Ms Lee, a student, was arrested at Sydney airport on Wednesday while trying to travel to Malaysia. Prosecutors say she withdrew the money from Westpac bank within a year and did not notify authorities of the error. She has been charged with obtaining financial advantage by deception and with knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime, Australian broadcaster ABC reported. The court in Sydney heard that Ms Lee, a chemical engineering student who has lived in Australia for five years, had opened a Westpac bank account in August 2012 and had mistakenly been given an unlimited overdraft. The Marseille synagogue that is becoming a mosque

Image
For the first time, a synagogue in Marseille is in the process of being sold to a Muslim organisation, which has plans to turn it into a mosque. The diverse port city is renowned for decades of tolerance and co-habitation - but some things are changing. Marseille has always been a place of second chances. Round the back of the old port, where many North African immigrants got their first view of France is a tiny youth centre, where the city's most troubled boys are encouraged to take up pool instead of petty crime. Sitting in a deckchair on the street outside, their youth worker, Samir, tells me most of the boys in the programme are Muslim. But in the melting pot that is Marseille, he suggests, no-one notices things like that. "Marseille is a town of immigration - it has the largest port in France," he tells me. "For centuries, it's welcomed different people from different countries, and we all live together very well. Here in the south, we have the sun, the beac
