Nigeria officials 'stole $15bn' from anti-Boko Haram fight

Image
About $15bn (£10bn) was stolen from the fight against militant Islamists in Nigeria under the previous government, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has said. The money was diverted through fraudulent arms contracts, he added. Several allies of ex-President Goodluck have been put on trial after being accused of awarding fake arms contracts worth $2bn. They deny any wrongdoing. President Muhammadu Buhari, who came to office last year, has vowed to fight corruption and recover "stolen funds". Those facing charges included former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki, ex-military chiefs and several contractors. They have all pleaded not guilty. Speaking at a university in the south-western city of Ibadan, Mr Osinbajo said the amount stolen was more than half of Nigeria's current foreign exchange reserves of $27bn. "It is important to send a message that no public officer can steal the resources of this country and expect to escape," he said. Africa's largest econo

Pirates paid '$400,000' ransoms in West Africa's Gulf of Guinea

Image
Ransoms of up to $400,000 (£273,000) have been paid to gangs which hijacked ships in the Gulf of Guinea in 2015, a maritime report says. The region was the most dangerous in the world for seafarers, with pirates becoming more violent, it added. A total of 32 seafarers had been kidnapped so far this year compared with 15 in 2015, the report said. Kidnapping for ransom took place mainly in the oil-producing areas off Nigeria's coast, it added. The spike in kidnappings appeared to be linked to political developments in Nigeria, the report by the US-based group Oceans Beyond Piracy group said. There had also been a sharp drop in oil theft last year, which the report put down to improved patrolling of Nigeria's waters, and the fall in oil prices making it less profitable. One of the most high-profile cases was that of the Malta-flagged MT Kalamos, an oil super tanker, which was attacked in February 2015. The tanker's abducted crew was freed after the $400,000 ransom was paid, the

Image

US Presidential Race Trump hopes to land decisive blow in Indiana showdown with Cruz

Image
New York billionaire Donald Trump hopes that Indiana's nominating contest on Tuesday will make him unstoppable in what originally had seemed to many a quixotic quest for the Republican presidential nomination. The famously blunt-spoken real estate mogul holds a double-digit polling lead over U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who has been campaigning in the Midwestern state almost non-stop since mid-April. Cruz has trumpeted Indiana, one of the last big states left in the fight to get onto the November ballot, as his golden moment to force a brokered nomination at the party's July convention. But it appears to be shaping up as his Waterloo. Fresh off a sweep of five Northeast states last week, Trump hopes a win in Indiana will put him within reach of the 1,237 delegates required to lock up the Republican presidential nomination before the convention. Cruz has been Trump's strongest rival but still trails him considerably in the delegate race. He has been struggling to keep Tru

Indian newspaper Deccan Chronicle reported on Monday that the guru had said he rejected the honour because he "only believes in working". Endeavour: Has the ship Captain Cook sailed to Australia been found?

Image
Researchers in the US believe they may be a step closer to locating the ship in which British explorer Captain James Cook sailed to Australia in 1768. The Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (Rimap) has known for some time the ship was scuttled in Newport Harbour in 1778. But they now believe they have narrowed down the search to a cluster of five shipwrecks on the seafloor. The researchers plan to investigate the ships and their artefacts further. They are also appealing for funds to build the right facilities for handling and storing items retrieved from the sea. "All of the 13 ships lost in Newport during the Revolution are important to American history, but it will be a national celebration in Australia when RIMAP identifies the Lord Sandwich ex Endeavour," the researchers said in a statement. Rimap is a non-profit organisation set up 1992 so that the "diving and non-diving public" could study maritime history and marine archaeology sites in Rhode Island'

Profit before tax came in at $6.1bn (£4.17bn) for the three months to March, down from $7.1bn a year ago. However, analysts had expected a far steeper fall in profits. HSBC chief executive Stuart Gulliver said the bank had been "resilient in tough market conditions". Job cuts? A conference call scheduled for later in the day could offer clues on possible further cost-cuts. The lender had flagged earlier in the year that it would impose a global freeze on pay and hiring to cut costs by the end of 2017. Independent banking analyst Frances Coppola said it was "likely there will be more job cuts" at HSBC following the fall in profits. But she said the results "could have been worse" after financial markets were highly volatile in January and February. Challenging HSBC's adjusted revenu

World-renowned mountaineer Alex Lowe had been climbing the 8,013m (26,290ft) Shishapangma peak in Tibet in October 1999 with cameraman David Bridges when they were hit. They were found by two climbers last week, still trapped in the ice. Mr Lowe's wife, Jennifer Lowe-Anker, said they had been "frozen in time". 'Closure and relief' Mr Lowe, 40, was considered one of the greatest mountain climbers of his generation and was well known in the climbing community for having rescued several other climbers. He and Mr Bridges, 29, were close friends as well as climbing partners, and had been scouting a route up Shishapangma, the 14th highest mountain in the world. The discovery of their bodies was announced on Friday by Mrs Lowe-Anker, who now runs a charitable foundation in her late husband's name with her husband, Conrad Anker. Mr A

Thomas Piketty: 'Indian inequality still hidden'

Image
French economist Thomas Piketty says there is still a "huge" gap in data about income tax in India. Official figures just released show only 1% of Indians paid tax in 2013, while 2% filed a tax return. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that publishing the data was a "big step towards transparency and informed policy-making". But Mr Piketty told the BBC the data was too thin to draw significant conclusions about levels of inequality. "Our Govt. has taken the landmark decision of publishing the income tax data. It is a big step towards transparency & informed policy making," Mr Modi wrote on Twitter. The data has prompted a lively debate about the extent of tax evasion in India - with commentators noting that there were very few tax returns at the highest end of the income spectrum. Just six individuals were in the top-earning tax bracket - declaring an average income of $10.4m (£7.1m). However, India has at least 84 billionaires, according to Forbes

Bin Laden death: CIA panned for 'live-tweeting' raid on anniversary

Image
The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been criticised for live-tweeting the killing of Osama Bin Laden as if it were happening today. It has shared details of the mission that led to America's most-wanted man being found five years ago in Pakistan. But reaction has been largely negative, with one Twitter user calling the move "grotesque and embarrassing". Others posted memes and gifs of people rolling their eyes and putting their heads in their hands. The CIA's usual tweets mostly concern historical trivia and artefacts. The CIA's first 'live tweet' , hashtagged #UBLRaid, begins: "1:25 pm EDT-@POTUS, DCIA Panetta, & JSOC commander Admiral McRaven approve execution of op in Abbottabad." At 1:15pm "Helicopters depart from Afghanistan for compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan". Just under 90 minutes later, "2 helicopters descend on compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. 1 crashes, but assault continues without delay or injury".

Trump accuses China of 'raping' US with unfair trade policy

Image
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has accused China of "raping" the US, in renewed criticism of China's trade policy. He told a rally in Indiana that China was responsible for "the greatest theft in the history of the world". Mr Trump, a billionaire businessman, has long accused China of manipulating its currency to make its exports more competitive globally. This, he says, has badly damaged US businesses and workers. "We can't continue to allow China to rape our country, and that's what we're doing," he told the campaign rally on Sunday. "We're going to turn it around, and we have the cards, don't forget it," he added. "We have a lot of power with China." Mr Trump, in his campaign manifesto , pledges to "cut a better deal with China that helps American businesses and workers compete". He sets out four goals that include immediately declaring China "a currency manipulator" and

Election looms over Australia's budget

Image
Australian Treasurer Scott Morrison's budget on Tuesday will double as an unofficial election campaign launch. Small tax cuts and spending on health, infrastructure and education have already been foreshadowed or announced. The cost of these will likely be offset by closing tax loopholes for multinational companies, ending some pension concessions for the wealthy and hiking tobacco taxes. The opposition says the reforms are too modest and favour the wealthy. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will dissolve parliament and call an early election on or before 11 May. Australia will almost certainly go to the polls on 2 July. Tuesday's budget will form the backbone of the Liberal-led coalition government's pitch to voters for re-election. Mr Morrison might well be wishing he had 24 hours up his sleeve. A lot is riding on his economic plan, which doubles as the government's pitch to voters. As the official announcement of an early election draws near, the resurgent opposition L

Personal Relationships 3 ways to love yourself better

Image
According to life coach, Sasha Carrion , there three top ways of practicing self-love: 1. Learn to be kind to yourself As stated earlier, nobody is perfect which means everyone makes mistakes. What really matters is learning from those mistakes and moving on, quit dragging the past into your future. 2. Take care of yourself always Take care of your body and soul. Learn to shut out negative comments especially your inner critic. You have to believe in yourself first and work towards achieving your goals, eat healthy too. 3. Create boundaries for yourself and others Know your limits and what you can handle. Committing to different tasks will make you miserable especially if you aim to please everyone. Sometimes, putting your needs first is very important before you can extend a helping hand to anyone else.
