Mistakes we make when cooking rice

Image
Rice is, without a doubt, the most delicious type of grass to grow in a swamp. That’s not praise to be given lightly. As long as humans have lived in houses, we’ve eaten rice. There are as many types of rice as there are places to grow it, from the familiar, highly processed white rice to whole-grain brown, all the way through red to black wild rices grown in Asia. However, the rise of convenience culture in response to rapidly diminishing supplies of free time mean more and more people reach adulthood without internalizing recipes and cooking techniques. Does that describe you? Welcome, you’re among friends. Allow me to share some mistakes I’ve learned to avoid. Choosing the wrong tools Ultimately, much of this advice will boil down to “your technique and tools should depend on what you’re cooking,” but there are a few grains of wisdom to glean when it comes to equipment, most importantly, your choice of pot. A pot with a thick bottom will better retain and distribute heat.

Apple's iMac Pro may end up being even more powerful than we thought (AAPL)

Image
A report from Pike's Universum ( via 9to5Mac ) claims that the upcoming iMac Pro will feature Intel’s next-generation server-grade Skylake-EX and Skylake-EP Xeon processors, which are a whole lot more powerful than the Core-X chips initially expected. The tech blog says that the information comes from firmware files contained in the macOS High Sierra developer beta, which refer to Intel's LGA3647 socket, not the desktop-class LGA2066. Another bit of information mentions the presence of a MacBook Pro-like ARM coprocessor, which Apple's laptop uses to power the new TouchBar. It is only speculation at this point, but this could mean that Apple may be thinking about bringing Touch ID to the iMac Pro. A server-like CPU (and the addition of a second processor) may seem like overkill, but Apple did say that this would be "the most powerful Mac ever made." And, at $5,000 (£3,928) as the starting price, it should be. The keyword there, however, is "starting price:

Image
Johnny Depp has joined the ranks of celebrities who have suggested killing the president. The actor appeared at the U.K.'s Glastonbury Festival on Thursday to introduce a screening of his 2004 film The Libertine . While on stage, he mentioned Trump—and then brought up the idea of assassinating him, knowing, he admitted, it would court controversy. "This is going to be in the press, and it will be horrible," he said. "When was the last time an actor assassinated a President?" The answer is Actor John Wilkes Booth, an actor who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Depp then noted that he's not an actor. "I lie for a living," he said. A Secret Service official told CNN it is aware of Depp's remarks on Thursday. The 54-year-old actor played Trump last year in a Funny or Die video parody of the businessman's 1987 book The Art of the Deal . Depp's remarks—which became worldwide trending topics on both Twitter and Facebook on

Breastfeeding is not only healthy for babies, it may also reduce a mother’s risk of having a heart attack or stroke later in life . This is the conclusion of a new study of 300,000 Chinese women published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Heart Association .. According to Xinhua, the Chinese news agency, women  who breastfed their babies had about a 10 percent lower risk of developing heart disease or stroke compared to those who did not . The study said the longer mothers  breastfed, the greater effects they had . “ The findings should encourage more widespread breastfeeding for the benefit of the mother as well as the child,” study co-author Zhengming Chen, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Oxford, said in a statement . “ The study provides support for the World Health Organization’s recommendation that mothers should breastfeed their babies exclusively for their first six months of life,” Chen said .

Nigerian women to stop making cheating an issue, Nollywood actress Funke Adesiyan has taken to Instagram to tell women that cheating doesn’t make your male partner a bad person, but only validates him as a man According to the actress, women should look beyond the flaw of cheating, and focus on the way their men treat them. Here’s what she wrote; “Leaving a man because he cheats is like relocating from Nigeria to America because of rain. News flash: it rains everywhere. Find a good man who loves you and appreciates you. Every other thing can be worked on. Men are naturally born to cheat. Look beyond this flaw and focus on how he treats you.” She went further to write; “Good morning guys. I read many comments from my last post and I couldn’t stop laughing. It’s funny that it’s women who are answering for their men that the men don’t cheat on them. My sisters, let the men answer for themselves. The truth is a bitter pill to swallow. You cannot answer for people. I stand by my positi

Saraki Unfazed by FG Intention to appeal against CCT ruling

The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has said he is unperturbed by the decision of the Federal Government to appeal the ruling of the Code of Conduct Tribunal that discharged and acquitted him of allegations of false assets declaration. The tribunal, headed by Justice Danladi Umar, has last week said based on the unreliability of the witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the case, it was discharging and acquitting Saraki of the allegations of false declaration of assets while in office as the Governor of Kwara State. But 48 hours after the acquittal by the tribunal, the Federal Government went to Court of Appeal to challenge the ruling. This was after the EFCC had washed its hands off the case, saying it was not the one prosecuting Saraki. Rather, the EFCC said one of the lawyers on its payroll, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), was the one prosecuting the case in his private capacity but using an operative of the agency as witness. Business men develop web portal to track stolen phones

Image
The Computer and Allied Product Dealers Association of Nigeria, a trade association of Computer Village market traders, is collaborating with Fonreg Software to develop a web portal, which enable them to track stolen phones. As a result, traders are expected to register on the web portal every buyer who purchases any item from them, especially mobile phones. The CAPDAN said that the need to create the portal became necessary given the rise in the sale of stolen smartphones and fake accessories in the market in the last one year. “In the event that a mobile phone was stolen and returned to the market for sale, the trader could quickly log on to the portal to verify if the phone was stolen. If verified that it was a stolen phone, the trader would quickly alert the real owner and the police would be invited for necessary prosecution,” the CAPDAN President, Mr. Adeniyi Ojikutu, told our correspondent. He added, “We are already using all means at our disposal to advise all customer

Timing meals later at night can cause weight gain, impair fat metabolism

Eating later can promote a negative profile of weight, energy, and hormone markers — such as higher glucose and insulin, which are implicated in diabetes, and cholesterol and triglycerides, which are linked with cardiovascular problems and other health conditions.” New findings suggest eating late at night could be more dangerous than you think. Compared to eating earlier in the day, prolonged delayed eating can increase weight, insulin and cholesterol levels, and negatively affect fat metabolism, and hormonal markers implicated in heart disease, diabetes and other health problems, according to results from researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, United States. The findings offer the first experimental evidence on the metabolic consequences of consistent delayed eating compared to daytime eating, and will be presented at SLEEP 2017, the 31st Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies LLC (APSS), on Sunday, June 4. “We k

Religious Tension

Christians and Muslims are allegedly facing each other in what can be described as religious crises in Katsina. The alleged brewing tension between minority Christians and a larger body of Muslim students have resulted in the closure of the Federal University in Dutsin-ma in Katsina state by the university’s management according to Sahara Reporters.   Andrew Moses, a security guard at the University, who spoke to Sahara Reporters said that:  “We saw strange faces stationed at Academic Department housing the university management staff, including the Vice Chancellor. When we inquired about their mission, they simply said, ‘We are here for jihad against Christians in the university.’” While reacting to the incident, a lecturer at the university who asks not to be mentioned said that the crises has been a long standing one.
