Nigeria's president finally signs long-delayed budget

Image
Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has finally signed into law a budget for 2016 after months of wrangling. He had refused to approve the 6.08tn-naira ($30.6bn; £21bn) budget amid claims of mismanagement and kickbacks among the officials who drew it up. The budget triples capital expenditure in Nigeria. Some 34 projects will get extra spending to help revive the economy, including improvements to power, health, and transport. "It is a great pleasure to sign the budget. It is a serious article of faith for the Nigerian people," the president said at a ceremony. "The signing of the budget today will trigger concerted efforts to reflate the Nigerian economy, a key element of which is an immediate injection of 350bn naira into the economy by way of capital projects." The budget is based on an oil price of $38 per barrel, slightly below the current global market rate of just over $40. Mr Buhari delayed signing the budget after finding errors in the spending program

'Taliban public execution' of Afghan woman

Image
A video has emerged showing the public killing of a woman after her alleged conviction by an informal Taliban court of killing her husband. The video was shot in Jowzjan Province a month or two ago, officials say, and has just surfaced on social media. A crowd listens as the verdict is given before the woman, sitting on the ground in a burqa, is shot in the back of the head. The Taliban have not commented. Similar killings in the past were widely condemned. The Taliban used to publicly execute women - usually over adultery - in the main stadium in the capital Kabul when they were in power in Afghanistan in the 1990s. Last year, a young woman was stoned to death in Ghor province in central Afghanistan after being accused of adultery. In August 2011, a woman and a man she had eloped with were stoned to death in the district of Dashte Archi in Kunduz province. A Taliban spokesman defended the 2011 incident at the time saying: "Anyone who knows about Islam knows that stoning is in the

North Korea sanctions should be eased, says Nobel laureates

Image
Sanctions imposed on North Korea are hampering health and science and should be eased, a group of three Nobel laureates have said. They were speaking in Beijing after visiting Pyongyang in what was billed as an attempt to promote dialogue. "You cannot turn penicillin into a nuclear bomb," one of them said. International sanctions on North Korea were further tightened this year after it claimed to have tested a hydrogen bomb and launched a missile into space. The laureates' visit came as a rare party congress opened in North Korea, with leader Kim Jong-un hailing his country's "great success" in its nuclear advancements. The event is widely seen as a chance for Mr Kim to cement his power, and South Korea urged the foreign delegation not to visit, fearing it would become a propaganda coup for the North "We didn't come to criticise them," said Aaron Ciechanover, who won a Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2004. "We really came to converse and to e

More than 80,000 people were evacuated from the city earlier this week. Thousands of people have been airlifted out but a mass convoy evacuating people from oil worker camps in the north was halted on Friday as huge flames flanked the road At least 2,500 made it through the flame-damaged city and small convoys resumed early on Saturday. Another 4,000 people are also due to be flown out. There is growing concern over the air quality for those still north, CBC reported. Laide Bakare Fans criticize her on social media for bragging about $1000 nails

Image
The actress captioned the image on social media "Feeling my $1000 nails like never b4." With the price of dollar at an all time high in the country, the price at which she claimed to have fixed her nails could be as high as #320, 000. Fascinating, right? Several fans must have done the mathematics too, for it did not take long before she was being called out for flaunting such ostentatious, lavish spending, asking her when she last donated anything to the needy. The actress however seemed unaffected by all the abuse, and is even thought to be finding the whole episode rather funny, after posting one other video and picture captioning them "How I love to disturb your WKEND. Lol OYA" and "Hahahahahaha Hahahahahaha, oo OMG my people! My people."
