corrupt AU soldiers arrested in Somalia

Five officers with the African Union mission in Somalia (Amisom) and 10 Somalis have been captured for offering military gear, police say.

They were found with ad libbed detonators, fuel, sandbags and discharge ammo boxes.

Amisom affirmed the captures saying it would not acknowledge "amateurish behavior among its faculty".

The mission is battling nearby Somali government powers against al-Shabab Islamist activists.

This is the first run through African Union troops have been captured in Somalia since Amisom was built up nine years prior, our reporter says.

The powers say the five AU fighters are from Uganda, which has the biggest number of troops in the 22,000-in number mission.

The police said they got the men as they were attempting to offer the gear to regular people.

Observation

Somalia's police boss Mohamed Sheik Hassan Hamud told columnists that the Amisom troops had been under reconnaissance for some time after assertions that they were included in the unlawful exchange.

''The Somali police have been researching rehashed claims that gear and different assets implied for the Amisom strengths were winding up in the hands of individuals who were abusing them," he said.

Somalia's Interior Minister Abdirizak Omar Mohamed said the offer of gear may "clarify why shakiness is expanding in Somalia".

The 15 men are relied upon to show up in court in Mogadishu soon.
