A Russian yacht has been kept by North Korean coastguards in the Ocean of Japan, Russia's remote service says.

Reports say the sailboat with five team on board was caught as it was coming back to Russia subsequent to taking an interest in an opposition in South Korea.

Russian representatives have requested the team's quick discharge and a clarification.

Russia is one of only a handful couple of nations that has generally well disposed ties with North Korea.

The yacht Elfin was en route from South Korea's port city of Busan to Vladivostok in Russia's far east when it was kept 130km (80 miles) off the coast on Friday, the remote service said.

The vessel was taken into the North Korean port of Kimchaek and the group were not in any peril, the service included.

The Russian emissary general was sitting tight for consent to visit them, it said.
