England midfielder reveals why gay footballers are not yet public

Jermaine Jenas says gay footballers are scared
of coming out because fear of abuse from fans. Former Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers
midfielder, Jermaine Jenas has waded into the
trending topic of homosexuality in football.
UK Mirror reported that two English Premier
League players are planning to come to come
public with their homosexuality.
The report was well received by many football
personalities who welcomed the idea, but Jenas
has his fears.
Jenas says gay footballers are scared of coming
out because fear of abuse from fans.
"I have never come across a single player who has
come out in English football, but that's not because
of players' attitudes,” Jenas says in his column
for Yahoo.
“The place a gay player would get the most support
- and the least amount of problems - is from their
team-mates .
"When you're in a football team you're in it
together, no matter what, and every player would
accept a gay team-mate with no problem
whatsoever.
"It's a fear of being abused at away grounds that
most prevents footballers coming out .
“Football is a game where we still have fans
meeting up for a pre-match scrap - we're talking
borderline caveman stuff.
“You can imagine the homophobic songs that would
rear their heads if a football player came out as
gay. "
The last EPL footballer to public declare as gay
was former Norwich and Nottingham Forest
striker Justin Fashanu , who public revealed as
gay in 1990. Eight years later, and facing charges of sexual
assault in the United States, he committed
suicide.
