Iranian Paralympian Dies

He suffered a fatal heart attack after enduring a brutal crash during his big race. The Iranian cyclist was competing in the men’s individual C4/C5 race at the 2016Rio Paralympicson Sept. 17, when things took a haunting turn. He was cruising down a steep hill on a mountainous area when he crashed around 10:40 a.m. local time, according to theAssociated Press. Bahman was immediately treated at the scene, but tragically suffered a heart attack while being transported to Unimed Rio Hospital. He sadly died shortly after arriving.International Paralympic Committee PresidentPhilip Cravenmade a statement about the catastrophe. “Thisi s truly heart breaking news, and the thoughts and condolences of the whole Paralympic Movement are with Bahman’s family, friends and teammates, as well as the whole of the National Paralympic Committee of Iran,” he said. “The Paralympic Family is united in grief at this horrendous tragedy which casts a shadow over what have been greatParalympic Games here in Rio.”
Bahman proved he was motivated in the competition, constantly practicing and perfecting his skills. The athlete even finished 14th in a time trial earlier in the week. He also previously tried out his luck at the London Paralympics,but came back again to win his first medal. We have to commend the superstar cyclist, who continued to do what he loves, despite the obstacles in his path. To commemorate his life and contribution to the sport, amoment of silencewill be held in his honor at the Closing Ceremony at Maracanã Stadium on Sept. 18.
