Florence's Arno waterway dike breakdown

A segment of the bank of the Stream Arno in focal Florence broken down on Wednesday morning, sending part of the street and no less than 20 stopped autos into a recently framed trench.

The breakdown occurred near the renowned Ponte Vecchio, a medieval secured span over the Arno.

The gap is around 200m (650ft) long and 7m (23ft) over.

Firefighters trust the abyss has been made by the disappointment of a huge water funnel underneath the surface.

Florence's Chairman Dario Nardella tweeted (in Italian) that nobody had been hurt in the episode on Lungarno Torrigiani.

He spoke to drivers to expel their autos from the adjacent territory, and said the water supply to part of the downtown area was cut off.

Local paper Corriere Fiorentino reports that a huge number of occupants are without water.

The primary indication of the issue came not long after 12 pm, when the police were called, the leader told Italy's Ansa news office.

The real crumple occurred at 06:14 nearby time, Mr Nardella said.
